What is a UK Tier 4 Visa (Student Route Visa)?

UK tier 4 visa is a visa to study in the UK for students who are not UK, EU and EEA citizens. You need this visa if:
- You are 16 years old and above
- You want to study an academic course fulltime (over 6 months).
- The UK government approves your chosen school or university.
This visa is required by most students who are applying for masters programs in the UK. You cannot come to the country to study without it.
When to Apply for the UK Student Visa?
You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, but at least 3 months before your travel to prevent time wastage due to insufficient time to process the visa.
Hint: Don’t leave it until the last minute. The processing time can take 3 to 6 weeks and if some documents are lost, it can even take longer. Early application will give you time to correct mistakes if they arise.
UK Tier 4 Visa Checklist for Masters Students
Let’s look at the complete list of documents and steps you need to follow to apply for the UK student visa as a master’s student.
1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
This is a unique reference number given to you by the university or college that has accepted you. Your CAS has:
- Course name and duration
- Tuition fees
- Any payments you have made
- University’s sponsor license number
Check all the information on your CAS before using it. If there’s an error, ask your university to correct it before you apply for your visa.
2. A Valid Passport
Your passport must:
- Be current (not expired)
- Be in good condition
- Have at least one blank page for your visa
If your passport is about to expire, renew it before applying.
3. Proof of English Language Ability
You need to prove you understand and can communicate in English. You can do this by:
- Taking an approved English test like IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic
- Showing proof of a degree taught in English
- Providing a certificate from your previous school (if accepted by the university)
Check with your university to know what English test they accept.
4. Proof of Funds (Financial Evidence)
You need to show you have enough money to pay for:
- Your tuition fees
- Your living expenses
Living expenses (maintenance funds):
- £1,334 per month if your university is in London
- £1,023 per month if outside London
You need to show funds for at least 9 months, even if your course is longer. So, the minimum you need is:
- £12,006 for London
- £9,207 for outside London
This money must be in your bank account or your sponsor’s account for at least 28 continuous days, and the account must be in your or your parent’s name.
5. Tuberculosis (TB) Test Certificate (If Required)
If you are from a country where TB testing is required in the process of applying to the UK visa, then you should take the test and get a clear certificate from a registered clinic.
This is most of the countries in Africa, Asia and Middle East. The certificate should be one that is approved by the UK government and not a hospital.
6. Passport Photographs
You need one recent passport-size photo that:

- Has a plain light-colored background
- Is not older than 6 months

7. Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
IHS gives you the opportunity to use the National Health Service (NHS) of the UK. This fee should be paid during your visa application.Students pay £776 per year. You will pay more if your course is more than a year. For example, in an 18 months course, it will be £1,164.
Once you pay, you will get an IHS reference number. Keep this number as you will need to use this when applying for the visa.
8. Visa Application Fee
Visa application fee is around 490. This fee has to be paid online when you fill out your visa application form. This is non-refundable even if your visa is declined or not.
9. Online Visa Application Form
Student visa application should be done online at the UK Government website. During the process:
- Create an account
- Choose your country
- Fill in personal and travel information.
- Upload required documents
- Pay visa and health fees
After that you will receive an email and an appointment letter for your biometrics.
10. Biometric Information Appointment
You need to visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide:
- Fingerprints
- Digital photo
This is called biometric enrolment. You need to bring your passport and printed application form.
11. Translations of Documents

What Happens After You Apply?

- You may be called for an interview
- You’ll get a decision letter in 3–6 weeks
If approved:
- Your passport will have a 30-day vignette visa sticker
- You need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days of arriving in the UK
The BRP is your full visa and proves your right to stay in the UK.

- Up to 20 hours per week during term time
